Physical Activities

The Physical section of the Award requires participants to take part in an activity for an hour a week outside of the normal school timetable.

This means pupils can use after-school clubs and weekend activities to count towards their award, but not their games options or PE classes. The main aim of this section is to get everyone raising their heart rate at least once a week: this could be in the form of Hockey, Rugby, Football or Tennis. The more adventurous might try kayaking, climbing, zumba, kick boxing or even snowboarding. The list of sports really is almost endless and The Academy would love to see pupils really challenge their own boundaries and try something new.

If a pupil chooses an activity from those offered by the school, the pupil must, as a matter of courtesy, inform the member of staff in charge of the activity before the activity starts of his or her intention to have it assessed as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This gives the member of staff an opportunity to note the participant’s contribution to see that it complies with the requirements of the Award. Mere participation is not always enough. To gain an award, there must be obvious signs of effort and commitment.
