S3 & S4 Modern Studies


Modern Studies develops understanding of contemporary issues. We examine the political, social and economic forces and institutions which influence our daily lives on a local, national and global scale. In particular we look at Democracy in Scotland, Crime in Society and the world power, China.

As well as providing knowledge and understanding, the course prepares you for active and informed participation in society so that you can become a responsible citizen shaping your own future. This includes the development of balanced opinions through research, critical analysis, interpretation and group discussion.

Modern Studies teaches valuable life skills through critical awareness of bias and exaggeration, particularly through media and politics.

Modern Studies teaches how to structure written responses from recall as well as interpreting presented data. It also develops valuable research skills through an investigation. Apart from textbooks, students will need to collect and analyse information on contemporary events from a variety of other sources including television, newspapers and the Internet.
