S5 & S6 Chemistry
The Department follow the SQA Higher Chemistry course.
Teaching of the three classes starts with Unit 1 (Chemical Changes and Structure), which is mixed with Unit 3 (Chemistry in Society) to give the calculations involved here a solid basis. A majority of Unit 2 (Nature's Chemistry) is then covered prior to the January Prelim. This leaves the Unit 2 work on Free Radical Chemistry and Unit 3 work on Redox Reactions, which provides the basis for the SQA Assignment. This is completed just prior to the Easter deadline and you then have a mock exam, covering all of the course content, just before you go on Study Leave.
The Department follow the SQA Advanced Higher Chemistry course.
Unit 3 (Researching Chemistry) is split between Unit 1 (Inorganic and Physical Chemistry) and Unit 2 (Organic Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis) as appropriate, in order to marry the theoretical and practical aspects. The two classes each have two teachers: one who teaches Unit 1 and one who teaches Unit 2. This approach is taken to best prepare you for a variety of simultaneous lecture courses at university. You are encouraged to start your SQA Project as soon as you return in August. You are assigned a supervisor for this and book time to work with Mrs Hunter in the Advanced Higher lab. You need to complete all your practical work and submit this part of your report before the January Prelim. You then have until Easter to complete your report, with your supervisor reading drafts before the final version is submitted to your assigned second reader. You then have a mock exam, covering all of the course content, just before you go on Study Leave.
