S3 & S4 Biology

National 5 Biology includes a diverse and up-to-date selection of concepts and ideas relevant to the central position of biology within society. The course covers all of the major areas of biology and allows pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the underlying themes: evolution and adaptation, structure and function, inheritance, life processes of living organisms, and interactions between organisms and their environment.

The course develops scientific understanding of biological issues and aims to develop pupils’ interest in Biology by using a variety of approaches, with an emphasis on practical activities.

Three Units are studied:
Cell Biology - pupils will develop knowledge and skills and carry out practical and other learning activities related to study and investigation of the cell.
Multicellular Organisms - pupils will develop knowledge, skills and carry out practical and other learning activities related to the study and investigation of whole organisms.
Life on Earth - pupils will develop knowledge and skills and carry out practical and other learning activities related to the study and investigation of life on Earth.
