The children’s final year at The Glasgow Academy Milngavie is Prep 4 which makes them feel very grown up. They are given additional responsibilities such as House Captains, Playground Buddies and Reading Partners with the younger children. The Prep 4 children further develop in confidence and independence. A 'can do, will do' open mindset is nurtured through a plethora of extra-curricular activities and outdoor learning opportunities over and above the core curriculum.
In Prep 4, emphasis is placed on Literacy, Numeracy, Health and Wellbeing and Social Studies which include an abundance of opportunities for creative thinking, problem solving and real-life experiences. Our small class sizes allow for more individual attention therefore each child is challenged and supported in order that they can be the best that they can be.
Children experience diverse and engaging topics, including 'My Healthy Body', 'Knights and Castles', 'Ancient Egypt' and 'Rainforests'. There are a number of opportunities for class trips and for classroom visitors within these, which enrich their learning and make the topics even more memorable for the children. A particular highlight of our year is our 'Knights and Castles' day when all three sites come together dressed in period clothing to enjoy a medieval banquet and themed activities held in the Prep. School on the main campus.
Specialist teaching in Music, French and P.E. continues and in addition swimming lessons are introduced to the Prep 4s across all campus sites to help the children foster a safe and healthy love of water.
In our stimulating, nurturing and vibrant smaller site at The Glasgow Academy Milngavie, the children thrive on the wide variety of activities on offer to them in Prep 4 including chess, netball, tag rugby, Bikeability, individual presentations, enterprising activities, and putting on assemblies and plays, to name but a few. With Barloch Moor on our doorstep, the children exercise regularly and take the curriculum outdoors whenever possible.
A key goal for us here at The Academy is to make sure that the transition experience for children into integrated Prep 5 classes at Kelvinbridge is a successful one. A number of activities are planned throughout the year to facilitate this process, including weekly mixed P.E. and Music classes at the Kelvinbridge site for all Prep 4 pupils from all sites.
