Prep 5 is an exciting year at The Glasgow Academy with children joining us at Kelvinbridge from TGA Milngavie, TGA Newlands and from other schools. With this in mind, at the start of the year we take the children on an exciting residential trip to the Ardmay Field Centre on Loch Long. This is a wonderful opportunity for all the children across the year group to bond and get to know each other in a relaxed and fun environment over the course of three days.
Back in the classroom the children receive specialist teaching in Music, PE, French, and a number of sports. Our Maths sets in Prep 5 are geared up to provide focused teaching, a more personalised learning environment and targeted support. In our Literacy work, we focus on developing our children's higher order comprehension skills through the use of Bloom's Taxonomy and Literacy Circles.
In topic work, the children learn through a wide range of themes encompassing Science, History and Geography. Our topic on space is very popular and the Prep 5 Space Day is a real highlight of the year in which children benefit from having the opportunity to use our brand new award-winning Senior School science labs in fun workshops. Tudors and Stuarts are brought to life with a real-life enactment of the Great Fire of London! The third big topic of the year is on rivers: a chance for the children to get wet and muddy during practical activities on Tannoch Burn and the River Kelvin.
