“Drama is like life with the dull bits cut out!” Alfred Hitchcock (director)
The philosophy of our Drama department is inclusivity. We aim to develop your creativity, communication, versatility and imagination with your peers: all of which can have a significant and positive impact on developing your confidence. As a student at The Academy you will have the opportunity to participate in any type of performance that interests you, whether that be as an actor, director, dancer, writer, designer or technician. Access to the arts from both the curriculum and co-curricular programme is at the heart of what we do, encouraging you to have a lifelong love of drama and performance while developing your inter-personal skills which are of inestimable benefit in your personal life and future career.
“Drama makes us feel connected to one another and less isolated. We find our identity and make it easier and more pleasurable to live, and it also gives us wisdom. We see our problems acted out: it’s an important socialising force.” Arthur Miller (playwright)
We are fortunate to have a close relationship with a number of theatre and arts organisations such as Scottish Youth Theatre, National Theatre of Scotland, Citizens Theatre, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the BBC to name but a few: this enriches our teaching and your learning.
“An actor must interpret life, and in order to do so must be willing to accept all the experiences life has to offer. In fact, he must seek out more of life than life puts at his feet.” James Dean (actor)
You will also acquire the fundamental theatre skills that will enable you to pursue careers in theatre, film and in broadcasting, and Drama will increase the significance, appreciation and enjoyment of these important areas of our culture.
“Drama can unlock the use of the imagination, intellect, empathy and courage. It carries the potential to challenge, to question and to bring about change.” Jude Kelly (theatre director)
A number of our students have been accepted to some of the leading Drama Schools/Universities in the UK, the National Youth Theatre as well as being accepted on to Theatre and Film Summer Schools in the USA.
“The actor should be able to create the universe in the palm of their hand.” Laurence Olivier (actor and founder of the Royal National Theatre, London)
