Danish Exchange
For four lucky members of the Sixth Year there is the prospect of participating in an exchange with Herlufsholm School, in Denmark. Last year we were hosts for four Danish students for a week before returning to discover what life as a pupil at an international boarding school is really like.
Eighty miles from Copenhagen and about half a mile from the centre of Næstved, Herlufsholm is set in beautiful grounds, surrounded by trees and fields and close to the river Suså.
Herlufsholm School was founded in 1565 and stands on the site of a monastery that was originally built in about 1200. Some of the present buildings date from 1870, but all are fully modernised and the many entirely new buildings fit sympathetically into these surroundings. This is a school of 415 students, 240 of whom are boarders, most of whom are Danes, often with expatriate parents living abroad. The language of communication in the classroom is Danish with the exception of the senior classes following the International Baccalaureate who have lessons in English.
Other than the fact it is a boarding school, it is similar to our own. It maintains the traditions and values of an old-established school, but is forward thinking. One such initiative is their International Exchange Programme. Herlufsholm already organises individual exchange projects every year for some of their students with a number of schools throughout the world. We are now proud to be counted in that number and look forward to long and successful partnership with them.
