Duke of Edinburgh's Award
Since the Duke of Edinburgh's Award was introduced at the Academy in 1984, over 1200 pupils have received awards. This includes over 200 pupils receiving the prestigious Gold Award from the Duke of Edinburgh. The aims of the Award scheme are to encourage pupils to become more aware of others, to help them learn to appreciate their environment, to foster the development of their own abilities, and to give them opportunities to become more self-reliant. The Academy is glad to support and encourage all of these excellent aims.
Every year pupils in the Third Year have the opportunity to begin at Bronze level working on the four sections of the Award: physical activity, skills, service and expeditions. Although 'D of E' is a voluntary activity, there is always a very large number of applicants.
