Music is taught at all stages in The Academy: Nursery/Kindergarten, Prep School and Senior School. Pupils in the Prep School and in S1 and S2 receive music twice a week. This provides an ideal environment to employ 5-14 initiatives, encompassing listening, practical and even composing at an early age. At present, there are almost 500 pupils receiving instrumental lessons every week in The Glasgow Academy. Tuition is offered on the following instruments: Piano, Organ, Guitar (Acoustic, Electric and Bass), Harp, Clarsach, Accordion, Voice, Drum Kit, Percussion, Flute, Recorder, Fife, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bagpipes, Chanter, Pipe Drums, and we also offer Music Theory classes. In addition to performing solo, The Music Department provides a range of opportunities for pupils to perform in groups in front of an audience, compose original music and study musical theory. There is a bi-annual music tour, the next will be to New York: recent tours have been to Italy and Belgium, where pupils played and sang in Bruges Cathedral, performed at a Secondary School and two Churches on the outskirts of Brussels. Also much time was spent shopping and visiting the local attractions, such as a chocolate factory, a musical instrument museum and the Comic Strip Art museum which houses the original plates for 'Tintin'. |
