Leaving a legacy or bequest to The Glasgow Academy

The far-sighted generosity of former pupils and friends of the school has made The Glasgow Academy what it is today.  Each generation has benefited from the gifts of the past and we need continued support to ensure many more generations will benefit from life at Atholl, Dairsie and Colebrooke Street.

A gift to The Academy can help avoid inheritance tax

Inheritance tax is payable following your death if your estate is worth more than £325,000 after the deduction of liabilities.  The Glasgow Academicals' War Memorial Trust is a registered charity and any bequests that you make in your Will are completely free from inheritance tax.  This can be a substantial benefit to your estate and your inheritors.

Bequests to The Academy would normally be deducted from the net value of your estate and reduce the amount which is liable for inheritance tax.  In this way you can ensure less of your money is lost to the Government from your estate.  You should discuss the full implications of making a Will with your legal advisor.  The External Relations Department will be pleased to advise the names of Academical solicitors who can provide this service.

If you intend to leave a gift in your Will to The Academy please let us know so that we can thank you properly.  If you wish to amend your Will, you can download a Codicil form here.  You may also wish to download our Legacy literature for further information.

The Kelvin Foundation

Anyone who lets us know they have made plans to leave a gift to the school in their Will is invited to join the Kelvin Foundation.  The inaugural meeting of the Foundation was held on 24 September 2009.  Membership is also open to all members of the school community who are major donors to The Academy's Regular Giving programme.  The Kelvin Foundation will continue to meet on an annual basis and provides an opportunity for members to be thanked and kept up-to-date with school developments.

RA McMillan (1934)

Robert (Bob) Alexander McMillan attended Glasgow Academy from 1928-34.  After school he went to Oxford before returning to work in the family coal mine at Lesmahagow until it was nationalised in 1947.  This prompted a move into farming. Bob, now married to Edith, purchased a farm in Galloway where he farmed until his death on 11 June 1978.  Bob and Edith had no children.  In consequence, both their estates were left for charitable purposes. Glasgow Academy was the main beneficiary of Bob's substantial estate.  In honour of his generosity, the school chose to name the new Art building 'The Robert A McMillan Design Centre' when it was opened in 1993.
