Chess Club
The Chess Club meets after school on Mondays and during lunch on Thursdays.
The Club is open to all ages of pupils and has a membership of approximately 20. We welcome a number of pupils each year who choose Chess as one of their skills for Duke of Edinburgh. All standards of players may join and beginners are given help and advice by the more experienced members. Phil Thomas is a chess coach who comes on Thursdays to help improve members’ standard of play.
Pupils are encouraged to take part in weekly ladder tournaments and in the House Chess competition which runs yearly. We enter a team into the Glasgow Schools Chess League which runs tournaments for three age groups: Junior, Intermediate and Senior. In past years, The Academy has been very successful in these events. Pupils can also enter the UK Land Chess Challenge, with those who succeed qualifying for regional and national finals.
